A man and his son appeared in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for rape and corruption.
This is after Bonginkosi Enerst Zwane (44) tried to bribe an investigating officer from the Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) after learning that his son, Thabiso Zwane(22) had been arrested for rape on July 17, 2023.

According to police reports the father offered the investigator R4000 to get rid of the charge. They agreed on R4500 to be paid a day before his son’s court appearance. The matter was then reported to the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in Secunda resulting in an undercover operation.
Provincial Spokesperson for the Hawks, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said when he brought the money to the officer, he was given the docket as part of the operation and was arrested shortly after that.

“Both accused appeared in court and were remanded in custody. The case against the father for corruption was remanded to August 1 and his son to August 3 for a formal bail application.”
