The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced that it will halt unauthorised deductions on social grants.
This is following numerous complaints from beneficiaries who have had money being deducted from their accounts without their approval.
The social grant intent and purpose is to assist qualifying beneficiaries to able to afford basic needs and bring equality amongst the people.
SASSA says It is the duty and responsibility of the beneficiary to declare one deduction that is not more than 10% of the social grant. This is according to Regulation 29 of the Social Grant Assistance Act of 2004. This must take place only if a beneficiary has agreed.

“SASSA is informing all beneficiaries that it does not offer financial services such as funeral cover and loan, but its mandate is to ensure the provision of comprehensive social security services against vulnerability and poverty within the constitutional and legislative framework,” reads a statement.
Beneficiaries are advised to contact the agency when there is something that they are not sure about before signing any agreement or visit local offices. The agency can be contacted on the official communication platforms that include website, social media, email and telephone.
