A master of the unusual: Justine Phahlane’s Extraordinary talent and creative journey

MBOMBELA – A 31-year-old self-taught artist from Pieterskaal has perfected the technique of using his entire body to create astonishing body art through contortion.

Justin Phahlane, popularly known as “The Rubberman,” shared with Mpumalanga Mirror that for him, contortion is more than just a performance; it is a form of art that brings him fulfillment, and his passion for contortion drives him to pursue what he loves most.

He participated in a variety of exhibitions and showcased his skills at multiple international events, including the International Sexpo, the International Agricultural & Commercial Show in Zambia, and the Tshwane Hindu Cultural Festival held last year. Phahlane discovered his passion for contortion art in 2007 after taking part in a school talent show, where he underscored attention for his distinctive talent.

“When my friends went to the stage to sing and dance, I did something different. I went to the floor with my flexing, bending and twisting. Actually I hit the floor with the jaw and the crowd’s reel and encouragement in my own feeling of accomplishment was enough for me to know that this is something I actually wanted to do and literally I never looked back” he said.

Looking ahead, Phahlane said he remains optimistic that this year will be good, with more performances and aimed to go beyond limits. He further urged the government to foster the development of various talents, particularly in underprivileged communities.

“I am appealing to the government to support us because we really need their support. And one of my goals or dreams is to one day open an academy whereby young people would come and learn about particular body art form and for one to achieve that I need support support from the relevant stakeholders, especially the government” Phahlane concluded.
