Bafana Bafana coach ruffles furthers with his comments

Bafana Bafana head coach, Hugo Broos said in a press conference that South Africa does not have quality players that play in Europe.

“Let’s face the problem that the level of the PSL is not high enough. Percy Tau is one of the best players in South Africa, but he can’t succeed in Al Ahly. This is not good,” he said.

This was following Bafana Bafana lost against 1-2 against Morocco for Afcon qualifiers at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium after leading for most of the match before conceding two goals in the second half.

“I am very disappointed that we did not win. When I see the first half, we started good, we scored a goal but from that moment it’s like there was a fear in the team not to lose what we had. There were maybe five or six chances that Morocco had,” he said.

Broos trended on social media yesterday for his comments about how local players do not make the cut in big European teams. “Only one a player of the Champions League wins, which was Casablanca, and it was the goalkeeper. The rest, there were no players of the Champions League winner. That shows enough. We do not have players that play for the big teams in Europe. We can look at Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns play in the Confederation Cup and Champions League. But Sundowns lost in the semi-finals while Pirates lost in the finals.

“Who won? Two Moroccan teams. Wydad Casablanca and Athletic. When I talk about quality players, even Morocco, there was no player in those teams in the selection except for the goalkeeper. Let’s face the problem of South Africa that the level of PSL is not high enough. We don’t produce high-quality players. Our best player is Percy Tau although he has problems with his team, Al Ahly. That was even when a South African coach wanted him. He doesn’t succeed there,” he said.
