BARBERTON- The municipality has issued a warning to residents regarding illegal mining activities taking place in the area may pose a serious risk to the quality and reliability of the local water supply.
Due to illegal mining at Rimers Creek, raw water abstraction has been disrupted and there is a risk of contamination to treatment processes and drinking water. The plant will be temporarily suspended until required safety and security measures are in place. This is to ensure community safety. Water supply will continue from the Suidkaap plant only.
Residents are advised to:
- Use water sparingly and avoid unnecessary consumption.
- Report any unusual changes in the colour, taste, or odour of tap water to the Municipal Call Centre immediately.
- Avoid using water from rivers, streams, or other untreated sources for drinking, cooking, or bathing.
- Follow all municipal updates and instructions regarding water quality and supply interruptions.
The municipality says it is working closely with the relevant authorities to monitor water quality, protect water infrastructure, and address the impacts of illegal mining activities. Water quality testing is being conducted regularly, and residents will be informed of any developments.
“We urge community members to report any suspected illegal mining activities to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, or the municipality. Community cooperation is essential in protecting our water resources and ensuring the health and safety of all residents,” reads a statement.
