MBOMBELA – The Mpumalanga Department of Education has extended its warmest congratulations to Thulani Sibiya, former Deputy Principal of Sophungane Combined School in the Nkomazi Local Municipality, on winning the 2025 National Best Teacher award.
The prestigious honour was presented by the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube on October 9 in Gauteng.
Sibiya, a passionate science and mathematics educator with seven years of experience, has made a significant impact in Mpumalanga’s education landscape.
His inspirational journey began at Sophungane Secondary School in 2024, where he transformed Grade 12 Mathematics results from 30% to 88% in just five months, with the overall pass rate reaching 91%.
In an interview with Mpumalanga Mirror, Sibiya expressed his gratitude saying: “This award is truly humbling and means the world to me. It’s a validation not just of my efforts, but of the collective hard work of my students, colleagues, and the support system around me.”
His outstanding work has also earned him a promotion to Senior Education Specialist for Mathematics in the province.
He says his mission is to nurture future professionals who will contribute to South Africa’s economy saying,: “We’re not just teaching subjects, we’re nurturing critical thinkers and problem solvers,” he emphasised.
Sibiya expressed his enthusiasm when he said: “I’m eager to keep uplifting education through workshops, school partnerships, and promoting Maths accessibility. My initiatives will be shared on social media and education forums, highlighting South African education progress.
“I aim to share impactful stories, showcasing education’s transformative power, and inspire others to join this noble profession.”
The Department of Education commended his exceptional work, saying: “He embodies the spirit of excellence that propels our nation forward.”
His story is an inspiration to many, and his legacy will continue to shape South Africa’s education landscape.
