The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has announced a series of intensified road safety measures aimed at reducing crashes and saving lives during the Easter long weekend.
MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, said the department will prioritise both vehicle roadworthiness and driver fitness as part of its strategy to prevent road accidents during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Authorities will focus on key routes across the province that have historically recorded high numbers of crashes and fatalities, with increased monitoring expected during peak travel times.
“Let us all comply with the rules of the road, exercise tolerance towards fellow motorists, remain vigilant for pedestrians, and refrain from consuming intoxicating substances while driving. Motorists are further advised to adjust their driving to prevailing road conditions, including inclement weather and construction zones on various routes. Organisers of church pilgrimages must ensure that vehicles used to transport congregants are in a roadworthy condition,” the MEC said.

Law enforcement officers will be deployed across these routes, conducting stop-and-check operations, block patrols and roadblocks to ensure compliance with traffic regulations. Macie emphasised the importance of responsible driving, urging motorists to obey traffic laws, avoid driving under the influence, and remain vigilant at all times.

He also called on organisers of church pilgrimages to ensure that vehicles transporting congregants are safe and properly maintained. The department has further committed to maintaining high visibility throughout the Easter period, with a focus on preventing avoidable road incidents and ensuring safer travel for all road users.
