MBOMBELA – The trial of murder-accused, Rassie Nkuna, was abruptly delayed at the Mbombela High Court this morning after he unexpectedly dropped his legal representative, Advocate Malesela Kekana.
Nkuna cited mistrust and conflict of interest as the reasons for his decision, stating that he sought alternative representation.
During a brief hearing, Judge Lindiwe Vukeya questioned Nkuna’s timing, given that the trial was on the cusp of commencing.
The judge noted that the case had already undergone case management and expressed concerns about the potential delay.
Nkuna explained that he had been experiencing difficulties with his legal representation for some time, but was unable to disclose the specific conflict of interest. He insisted that he wanted a new legal representative who could better understand him, and also requested a Sepedi-speaking interpreter, as the current interpreter was mixing Sepedi and Sesotho.

After a brief adjournment, Judge Vukeya ruled that she could not compel Advocate Kekana to continue representing Nkuna. The matter was subsequently postponed to Friday, October 24.

In her remarks, Judge Vukeya assured the court and the public that every effort would be made to ensure the trial proceeds without further delays.
Nkuna faces 12 counts including two counts of murder, three counts of kidnapping, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, two counts of possession of an unlicensed firearm, two counts of unlicensed ammunition, as well as one count of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
