PIENAAR – The long-delayed road construction project on the D1723, commonly known as Lihawu Road, is finally making progress.
This is after the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport replaced the initial contractor over poor performance and failure to meet deadlines.The project, which was officially handed over in July 2024, had been marred by delays and growing frustration from residents who feared it would never be completed.
Community members previously told Mpumalanga Mirror that the deteriorating gravel road had become a serious health hazard due to excessive dust, while ongoing delays negatively affected local businesses and disrupted daily commuters.
The frustrations led to several protests, with residents demanding accountability and urgent intervention from the department.
Following the appointment of a new contractor, the department reported that work was progressing under an accelerated catch-up plan aimed at ensuring the project met its revised deadlines. MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, recently conducted a site visit alongside departmental officials to assess progress on the rehabilitation project.

“The purpose of the visit was to assess progress and the implementation of a comprehensive catch-up plan. The department continues to strengthen oversight and implement targeted accelerated interventions to ensure that the project progresses in line with the revised timelines,” said Thomo.
He added that the department remains committed to intensifying monitoring efforts and enforcing strict compliance with quality standards and project deadlines until the completion of the project.
The renewed progress has brought hope to residents who have waited years for the upgrading of the road, which is regarded as a vital transport route for surrounding communities.
