Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Gabisile Shabalala accompanied by the Head of Department, Busisiwe Nkuna visited the border today and interacted with both nationals who expressed their unhappiness at the law enforcement officers. One South African citizen told Shabalala that they’ve not had a drop of water since they’ve arrived. He also pointed out that law enforcers have not informed them on what is causing delays.

“We arrived here at 3pm yesterday. There was no communication forthcoming to us. There was no food, water or toilet. My COVID-19 certificate expired last night not because I was late but of the delays at the border. We now have to stand in a queue that doesn’t make sense. Five random people move to the other side while nobody knows nothing. We don’t even know how long we’re going to stand here for,” he said.

Shabalala admitted that there was crises and that it needed to be resolved as soon as possible. She said she noted the concerns and will let the officers attend to them.

“I heard your point and it’s a sensitive one. Without food or water one cannot function. It’s wrong that they’re not communicating anything to you. When I got here there was miscommunication about a 24-hour operation at the border which was not true. I want to apologies for the inconvenience and moving forward will make sure that you’re communicated to.”

The operation included members of the South African Police Service, South African National Defence Force and Mpumalanga Provincial Traffic Law Enforcement among others. The MEC of the department, Gabisile Shabalala and the Head of the Department, Busisiwe Nkuna were also present to oversee the operation.
