The Provincial Traffic Law enforcement officers working in collaboration with other stakeholders, have stopped over 84 000 vehicles in various operations across the province between 1 and 20 December, 2024.

About 26 000 vehicles went through various weigh bridges. It is also during this time that more than 15 000 traffic fines were issued to motorists for various offences ranging from driving vehicles with worn out tyres, failure to stop at traffic lights, excessive speeding, failure to wear safety belts to name a few.

As part of enhancing road safety by dealing with vehicles that are not roadworthy and could be posing danger to other road users, nearly 250 vehicles were discontinued. About 600 vehicles were also impounded.

READ | Moz and SA governments to restore order at borders

About 35 drivers were arrested for reckless driving and 24 of those arrested, were taken in for suspected drunken driving.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie says he is content with the level of law enforcement visibility in the province.

“We are satisfied with how the plan is being implemented and the level of cooperation among all stakeholders. Our law enforcement officers and emergency personnel will continue to work around the clock to save lives on the road,” Macie added.

The MEC once again implored motorists to drive cautiously and obey the rules of the road.

He believes that the intentions of the plan will be realised if motorists and road users play their part because road safety is not only the responsibility of government.

READ | Three vehicles recovered in Mozambican border

Meanwhile traffic peaked significantly on most roads with some roads recording over 4500 vehicles per hour on Friday afternoon.

Routes that continue to record more vehicles movements on Saturday include: R40 (Hazyview to Acornhoek), R536 (Hazyview to Kruger Gate), N3 (KwaZulu Natal to Gauteng) and N2 (Piet Retief to Ermelo).
