UMP has received more than 124,000 applications for the 2026 academic year. In line with the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) approved enrolment plan, UMP has 3,969 spaces for the undergraduate first-year intake.

“Based on our enrolment targets, we will increase our student enrolment from 11,885 in 2025 to 13,077 in 2026. This is significant for our growth trajectory and academic excellence as we pursue our strategic objectives, guided by our Vision 2030. We would like to urge all students who have received admission offers to register online without delay, as we look forward to warmly welcoming them to our university,” says UMP Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Thenjiwe Meyiwa.

In-person registration (Campus) for first-year students who have been admitted will be held from 26 January – 30 January 2026. UMP urges applicants to check the outcomes of their application on the student portal. Furthermore, the UMP is urging prospective students not to pay any person or entity money to obtain admission, as the University has a zero-tolerance policy for such actions. The expo hosted by the African National Congress Gender and Equity Sub-Committee. It was aimed at celebrating the contribution of the youth and women to economic growth. This also highlighted the party’s commitment to their commitment, empowerment, the preservation of their heritage, and the uplifting of communities.

One of the highlights was Dr Esther Mahlangu being honoured for her unique Ndebele designs which have preserved a rich cultural heritage and made it to global stages over the years.

Speaking at the ceremony, the 88 year-old legendary Mahlangu boldly spoke of the places she has visited across the world. She said she was honoured that her work is recognised.

Chairperson of the Gender and Equity Sub-Committee, Angie Motshekga commended Mahlangu for her work. ANC NEC member, Bathabile Dlamini shared her sentiments.

“As a country we are proud of you. There is no better way to show our appreciation as the ANC than to honour you in the presence of those who are close to you. Thank you for putting us on the map,” said Dlamini.

Additionally, three local women received massage beds, an opportunity to be linked to accommodation establishments and training to be certified massage therapists in an effort to drive tourism for inclusive growth and prosperity.

The UMPCFERI multidisciplinary team presented a business idea focussing converting ripe mangoes into dried mango snack, by products (leaves, seeds & peels) into compost.

This would in turn reduce the overripening and rotting of mangoes thus reducing food waste and enhancing food security. As a result, international mentors have been appointed to support the UMPCFERI team. In the process of implementing the idea as a viable business venture.

Speaking during the handover ceremony of the award at UMP, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Thoko Mayekiso hailed the team’s dedication, discipline, and professionalism.

“Your work is a true reflection of our graduate attributes. This requires one to be resourceful, responsive, and responsible. You have demonstrated traits of greatness. May you continue to make us proud as the UMP community,” said Prof Mayekiso.

The accident occurred near the University of Mpumalanga turnoff towards Karino. The vehicles involved include two hatchbacks and a bakkie.

The deceased includes both drivers of the hatchbacks and one passenger. They succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Two occupants in the bakkie escaped with slight injuries.

The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, said an investigation is underway. Reckless driving is suspected to have caused the crash.
