Dr Esther Mahlangu turns 85

Visual artist, Dr Esther Mahlangu turned 85 today and many sent her well wishes on social media.

She’ll also be launching her largest solo exhibition titled, Esther Mahlangu 85 on November 19 to commemorate her birth month. exhibition is curated by Ruzy Rusike and will be launched online and at The Melrose Gallery in Johannesburg until December 20.

She will showcase her artworks created over the past three years, including the bold, geometric paintings for which she has become so globally acclaimed, and an exciting new series of sculptures. However, Mahlangu won’t stop there. After the opening of the exhibition, she will unveil two 16m paintings at Southgate Mall and launch a range of handbags with collaborator, Carol Bouwer. She’s also working on the touring retrospective of her work set for 2023.

“We expect strong interest in this exhibition from global collectors based on positive increases in prices fetched by leading auction houses both locally and internationally, several sales to important collectors over the last 2 years and in the run up to Dr Mahlangu’s Retrospective Exhibition which is scheduled to tour global museums from 2023,” read the Melrose Gallery statement.
