Two linked to medical student’s murder arrested

Two suspects were arrested in connection with the murder of medical student, Wiseman Mthunzi Zwane.

One suspect, an 18-year-old, appeared in the Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 11. The other will appear in court soon.

Community members discovered Zwane’s body at a river in Nhlazatshe last Wednesday. According to police reports, he sustained stab wounds.

The 26-year-old medical student had studied in Cuba. He was about to complete his clinical training at the University of Free State.

Colonel Donald Mdluli confirmed the arrest of suspects. The second one, a minor, is currently under police guard after the community allegedly attacked him before his arrest last Friday.

“Police cannot rule out the possibility of making more arrests in this matter investigations continue. They postponed the matter until July 19, 2022 for a formal bail application,” said Col Mdluli.

Meanwhile, MEC for Health, Sasekani Manzini condemned the murder, stating that it is a serious concern and setback for the department.

“His family and the people of the province have been robbed of a young and skilled doctor in the hands of criminals. The family have lost a son, the nation lost a health care worker. A soldier that was ready to come back to communities to share his expertise in providing health care services. In the name of addressing disagreements, we urge our communities to not engage in violent conduct. We also call on all law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in investigating the circumstances of this incident. We further would like to send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Manzini.
