The first day of school kicked-off smoothly in most schools in Hazyview, marking the beginning of a new journey for many.
Most schools in the area had no complaints of some learners not being allocated space for grades one and eight. Scores of learners and teachers resumed with the 2025 academic year.
Learners at Mpunzana Primary School started off on a high with a special prayer that was led by a local pastor. Parents of the grade R learners came out in numbers to witness their children’s first day at school. There were mixed emotions from both the parents and learners, with mostly the young ones very emotional as this new transition to a big school dawned on them.

One parent, Precious Mahlangu, said she believes the kids will receive the best education and will be taken good care of.
“I am happy and anxious that my child is going to a big school now. I am leaning towards the positive side that she is fine and I also believe and trust that our teachers will also take care of our children and making sure they learn in an environment that is safe,” Mahlangu explained.
On the other hand, some parents further expressed concern about the safety of learners on their way to school. This comes after the bridge leading to the school was partially wiped off due to the persistent heavy rainfalls that took place during the past weeks.
Another parent, Thandazo Mculu who had brought her twins to school had this to said as excited as she was to bring her children to school, she is concerned about the roads damaged by rainfall. There is so much damage on the road, the kids might get hurt”, Mculu added.
The parents have vowed to always support and accompany the kids to school until the roads are fixed.
