The MEC for Education, Bonakele Majuba made a follow-up visit to Alfred Matshine Secondary School today.
This follows after a bullying incident where four learners, two from Alfred Matshine, and two from another school threw eggs and poured the custard over another learner for refusing to join their gang, Izikhothane.
“MEC Majuba a report on a preventative plan the school has devised to ensure that such incidences are nipped in the bud and will not occur in the future,” read the Department’s statement.
The Department has suspended the learners implicated. Psycho-social counseling and support were also offered to learners.
The parents of the school through the SGB expressed their condemnation of the incident of violence and gangsterism.
“SGB Chairperson, Noah Chiloane, on behalf of parents, pledged to work hard and smart to ensure that every learner within their school jurisdiction is protected and free to learn. In his remarks, MEC Majuba stressed the need for society to rid itself of the culture of violence that manifests in various forms such as Gender-Based Violence, gangsterism, bullying, and many other forms.”
“It is a cause for concern that incidents of bullying seem to be on the increase presently. It is thus prudent that as school communities and government, we should be proactive to guide our learners through the code of conduct for learners as well as the virtue of solving disputes and misunderstanding through dialogue and the involvement of teachers.”
