Pay point robbers arrested in Elukwatini

The police have arrested three heavily armed suspects at Elukwatini yesterday.

According to the police, about four suspects attacked the Fidelity security guards who loaded cash at the ATMs in one of the pay points.

The suspects then blasted explosives and made off with cash in a VW Polo. Local securities and police gave chase. During the chase, a shootout ensued. The suspects shot dead a person during the shootout.

“They drove to a nearby guesthouse where they booked. They abandoned their vehicle and one suspect fled with a Mercedes Benz C-Class. Three suspects fled to towards the mountain while one suspect was shot and taken to hospital.”

The two, aged 23 and 26, were questioned and pointed out two rifles and one pistol hidden in the ceiling. They also found 102 pieces of ammunition for rifles and 14 for 9mm pistols. The police also found an undisclosed amount of cash, explosives, and other equipment used during the robbery. They linked the two suspects to other cases at Ermelo and KwaMhlanga, which are due to appear in court soon.

“The police charged them with business robbery, murder, attempted murder, ATM bombing, unlawful possession of explosives, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. They will appear in court soon.” The police will take the firearms for ballistic testing.
