SCHOEMANSDAL – A significant breakthrough has been made in the case of Sergeant Lawrence Dumisani Mtshweni’s murder, with two suspects, Rodgers Silinda (27) and Tsepo Trevor Mashele (27), arrested.
According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the two appeared at the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, for a bail application. Both suspects abandoned their bail application, and the case was postponed to October 2, 2025, for further investigation.
Sergeant Mtshweni (47) was shot while responding to a business burglary in progress at the Shoprite Usave Store in Schoemansdal, along with his three colleagues, on Saturday, August 9, 2025. Mtshweni later succumbed to his bullet wounds at a hospital in Mbombela.

The police officer was laid to rest at Schoemansdal Cemetery on Saturday, August 16. The investigation is ongoing, with three other alleged suspects reportedly killed in a joint operation between the South African and Swazi police in Eswatini. Two suspects were fatally shot, while the third allegedly took his own life.
