Now that the prosecution has announced additional charges of conspiracy to murder, the case assumes all the hallmarks of an organised crime. These investigations are within in the competency of The Hawks,” read the statement.

It further read that the incompetence of the Detective Unit, has kept the family in the dark. “This is treasonous, to say the least.” The family requests from the court an order compelling the transfer of the docket to The Hawks. “The family attorneys on record in this litigation are MM Mashele Attorneys led by Advocate Gillian Benson from Maisels Chambers.”

The arrest came within the 72-hour activation plan activated by police minister, Bheki Cele on Tuesday after the 28-year-old’s body was found at a timber plantation outside Mbombela.

Family spokesperson Sinawo Thambo said they welcome the arrest and the police meeting their own target. “We must commend the police for informing us with something concrete within the 72 hours. The same way we criticise, we must be able to commend and compliment them for the hard work they have been doing,” he said.

The suspect is facing a murder charge while investigations continue and will appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 9.

Barberton Correctional Centre escapee, Amos Shabangu Mashaba was re-arrested last night Mhlambanyathi near Hazyview.

The Department of Correctional Services confirmed this in a statement the morning stating that a further charge of escaping would be added. “Mashaba was convicted in 2003 for murder, rape, theft and robbery. He has been placed in lawful custody to continue serving his sentence in a maximum security correctional facility,” reads the statement.

Meanwhile, the search for Juneal Jacobs who escaped in Malmesburry Correctional Centre last week continues. He was among the three remand detainees who escaped and was awaiting trial for murder before he escaped. Two others were re-arrested.

Elukwatini SAPS Station Commander Colonel Beauty Marivate received a call about a business burglary. She immediately rushed to the scene with other officers as backup. Upon arrival, there was an exchange of fire and it hit her.
