Dept of Education laptops procurement investigation almost finalised

The investigation on the matter pertaining the acquisition of laptops by the Department of Education, is at an advanced stage.

This is according to a statement released by the Office the Premier following an oral reply session at the Provincial Legislature, that an investigation will be instituted into this matter.

It is reported that R2 million was spent on 22 laptops for office-based officials in the department.

The department admitted that the devices came at a high cost. However, the procurement was driven by technical requirements rather than preference or extravagance.

“The procurement of these laptops was therefore based on operational necessity, not luxury. To this end, the department welcomes the ongoing investigation into this matter, as it offers an opportunity to present the facts and clarify any misconceptions,” said the department in a statement.

The investigation seeks to gather facts, supporting evidence and verify any information or documentation at their disposal, in light of applicable legislation.

Premier, Mandla Ndlovu says the 7th administration is guided by the principles of good governance to ensure that the acquisition of services by the state is based on sound financial grounds. He says the decision is testament to the commitment of the 7th administration to the priorities, as set out in the Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP), one of which is the building of a capable, ethical and developmental state.

“The premier has noted public interest on the matter, and therefore transparency will be applied in dealing with the investigation and its outcome. Due to the seriousness of this issue, once the investigation is finalised next week, we will inform the public. In the interest of fair administrative justice, I urge you all to allow the investigation to be finalised without undue pressure,” reads the statement.
