Education department slams “Pens Down Parties”

MBOMBELA – As the 2025 National Senior Certificate Examinations approach their finale, the MEC for education, Lindi Masina, has called on the Mpumalanga community to unite and firmly reject “Pens Down Parties,” emphasising the importance of education and academic progress.

MEC Masina stressed that such parties undermine the efforts of students who are committed to their studies and the broader goals of improving education in the province.

“As the 2025 National Senior Certificate Examinations draw to an end, the Department of Education wishes to state that it strongly condemns “Pens Down” parties. These are not official school activities; they are unsafe and have no place in our efforts to protect and nurture the future of our young children,” she said.

Masina’s appeal comes as the province aims to improve its education outcomes, with a focus on mathematics, science, and e-learning initiatives. “We need to work together to create an environment that supports our learners and promotes academic excellence,” she explained.

Her call to action is seen as part of a broader effort to strengthen the province’s education system and ensuring students reach their full potential. The community is urged to support learners and educators in their academic pursuits, promoting a culture of learning and achievement.

The Department of Education has condemned “Pens Down” parties, citing safety concerns and the risk of substance abuse, violence, and accidents. Learners are encouraged to refrain from attending or organising such events and instead focus on responsible celebration and reflection. Parents and communities are also urged to remain vigilant and guide learners towards making responsible choices.

Additionally, the Class of 2025 is encouraged to donate their school uniforms to those in need, promoting a culture of generosity and compassion.

“When you give your uniform to another learner, you are not only helping someone in need, but also showing maturity, leadership, and humanity,” stated Masina.
