Former court clerk sentenced for theft

Former court clerk, Cornelius Mametse (43), pleaded guilty on six corruption charges and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment which is wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not found guilty of similar charges.

The matter was brought to the attention of the Hawks Middleburg based Serious Corruption Investigation in 2023.

Mametse was sentenced after pleading guilty of stealing money from six victims, claiming that the money was required to pay the services of the sheriff or legal representatives for his personal gain in 2022.

The cases were investigated and Mametse was positively linked to all the charges, leading to the sentence handed down by Kwamhlanga Regional Court on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Nico Gerber condemned incidents where people use their authority to steal from the vulnerable. “We can not allow such activities to happen to the victims who are already affected by crime” said the General.
