Three suspects who were in police custody have been charged for late political figure, Muzi Manyathi’s murder.
The PR Councillor in the Mkhondo Local Municipality was fatally shot on the evening of November 4, 2022 at a filling station.
According to police, a Mercedes-Benz occupied by suspects (with Gauteng registration number plates) was seen moving from one fuel pump to another without refilling meanwhile Manyathi reportedly bought something from the kiosk. It is said that one male suspect came out of the vehicle, armed with a firearm, and shot the victim multiple times at close range. The suspects then fled the scene using the same vehicle.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdluli confirmed that team members managed to locate and charge three suspects between the ages 32 and 36, for murder on Thursday, July 10.

He said a murder case was investigated and led to the three that were in custody for a separate matter, details will be shared at a later stage.
“The three suspects appeared in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court and the case was postponed for further investigation. They will appear again on September22, 2025. There will be an identity parade that will be conducted and as a result, their identity will be withheld until that process is finalized.
