The Grade 12 Class of 2024 will sit for the Preparatory Examinations starting on Monday, 19 August until 18 September, 2024.
The Preparatory Examinations are written under similar conditions as the end of the year, Final Examinations. They will provide an opportunity for learners to gauge themselves using similar tools as the end of the year examinations.
These examinations offer learners with an important tool to verify their state of readiness as well and to provide the required remedial assistance before learners can write their final examination.
The marks are used as part of the School-based Assessments (SBA)component and in most subjects the Preparatory exams carry a sizeable weighting.
The rules and regulations are similar and include:
-One table and chair per candidate
-Proper invigilation:
-No copying or irregular activities are allowed during the Preparatory exam sessions
-Adherence to starting and finishing times as predetermined by the question paper.
“This will also assist learners to improve their SBA marks and to finish the curriculum on time so that revision is done to benefit learners to be better prepared for the final exams. These exams will also help to reveal the strengths and weakness of each learner and allow time for tailor-made support to be made,” reads a statement.

Parents are requested to support their children by affording them an opportunity to study at home. They are encouraged to create a conducive environment and provide support for their children to study, motivate and encourage children to plant a winning mentality.
Learners and schools are advised to prepare thoroughly for the Preparatory examinations and are urged to continue studying individually and in groups. Learners must continue attending lessons as per school arrangement. These Preparatory Exams do not in anyway mean the end of teaching and learning.
MEC for Education, Cathy Dlamini urged learners to take full advantage of this opportunity.
“We want the best for our learners and we are confident that these preparatory examinations will help them immensely. We thus need to work as a collective with parents, teachers and the learners to ensure that learners improve their performance using these examinations as stepping stones. We really urge them to take this opportunity with both hands and we wish them all the best,” said Dlamini.
