ERMELO – Police finally cracked a kidnapping case of a woman who disappeared with a baby girl 20 years ago.
According to police reports, on 23 March 2001, a woman, aged 16 at the time, was discharged together with her newborn from Ermelo Provincial Hospital. On their way home, to Breyten, accompanied by the child’s aunt, they met a woman who allegedly offered to assist to hold the baby. The mother was experiencing pain and drowsiness while waiting for the aunt who had gone to a shop nearby.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the woman the took the baby, promised to return. She went towards the direction where the aunt headed. The aunt returned but the woman was nowhere to be found.
“The incident was reported to the police in Ermelo and a case of child abduction was opened. Police commenced with their search but no information came forth until last month. Recent investigations led to information resulting in the arrest of a 50-year-old woman who appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on 30 November and was granted R1000. bail,” said Brigadier Mohlala.

The case was postponed to 18 January 2022. Meanwhile, the victim is in a place of safety while receiving psychological support services. Soon she will be reunited with her biological family soon. (The name of the suspect is withheld for the protection of the victim’s identity.)
