Residents of the Tjakastad and Malahleka areas are advised to be vigilant after a leopard escaped from the Nkomazi Game Reserve.
The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) received a complaint on Monday, May 6 that the leopard had killed a goat.

“A team was dispatched from the Songimvelo Nature Reserve to handle the Damage Causing Animal (DCA) incident. Unfortunately, the the team’s efforts were unsuccessful. A team has been on site since Monday and on Tuesday, the Nkomazi Game Reserve provided a helicopter that searched the area for two hours and also was not able to locate the leopard,” reads a statement.
The MTPA team is currently around the area where the leopard was spotted continuing with the operation and working together with a specialised dog unit to assist with the search.
The community is advised not to try and capture the animal on their own, to avoid walking in the mountains at night until the leopard is found as it is still in hiding.
