Man assaulted following rape incident

A 33-year-old alleged rape suspect is in hospital after community members assaulted him for allegedly raping a 23-year-old woman at Thubelihle in Kriel.

According to the police, the victim was on her way to a nearby hiking spot for a lift back home. Upon her arrival, a male allegedly accosted her, and both proceeded to Nkanini Street. “The suspect allegedly raped her while the victim screamed for help. A group of men came to her rescue, and the suspect was assaulted,” read the police statement.

The police were tipped off, and on their arrival, the suspect was arrested. However, because of injuries, he was taken to hospital, and he was under police guard. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon. The Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Investigations (FCS) Unit are investigating the case.
