Motorists urged to use the road safely this weekend

The iconic Mbombela Stadium will yet again host the international rugby match between South Africa and Argentina on Saturday, 28 September 2024, while schools will reopen for the fourth term next week on Tuesday, 1 October 2024.

Many sports and rugby enthusiasts are expected to come to support Amabokoboko this weekend. This means most roads will experience significant increases in traffic volumes. This will also be exacerbated by those who will be returning from school holidays.

The hosting of this match is good for sports development but it will also boost tourism in the city and the province.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie is urging motorists traveling to Mbombela to obey the rules and drive considerately to avoid crashes.

“We are excited to be hosting Argentina on our shores because it will not only contribute to the excitement that is brought by sports. Hosting big events also boosts our economy and tourism. What usually affects the exhilaration is usually road crashes that are mostly avoidable. Hence, we are appealing to road users to use the road with great caution this weekend,” says Macie.

The MEC further reassures the road users and visitors that the security will be on high alert to respond to any emerging situation.

Macie further advises long-distance drivers to rest sufficiently along the way and also ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy.

He warned that law enforcement would not tolerate any reckless and negligent driving and public drinking.

Some of the roads that are expected to be busy include N2, N3, N4, N11, and N12, as well as R40 and R38, among others.
