The multiple vehicles collision include two hatchbacks, a light delivery vehicle (LDV), and an articulated truck. Four victims were all occupants in one of the hatchbacks that collided head on with the bakkie.

One person who was in the hatchback that collided with a bakkie, sustained serious injuries.

Five people including the driver and four passengers in another hatchback sustained slight injuries. All the injured people were transported to the nearby Shongwe Hospital for medical care.

The crash is now subject of the investigation by Safety Engineering team in the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, South African Police Service (SAPS) and Road Traffic Management Cooperation (RTMC).

The first crash happened at about 03:00am between Hectorspruit and Impala, where two articulated trucks collided head-to-rear. The truck driver got injured after colliding with a bakkie.

In a separate incident, a midi-bus and a sedan collided head-on. It also affected a third vehicle during the collision between Nkomazi Toll Plaza and Malalane. 11 people, including the driver from the midi-bus, were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the sedan was slightly injured.

“People should expect some delays as the clearing of the crashes is underway. Motorists are also urged exercising tolerance and patience to avoid secondary crashes. Motorists are warned to be cautious in the rainy weather. We also encouraged them to keep their headlights on, reduce speeding, and keep a safe following distance,” said Community Safety, Security and Liaison in a statement.
