A group of taxi operators attacked female law enforcement officers in Secunda on Friday, August 4.
Female Transport Inspectors were working on R546 between Embalenhle and Evander this morning. At about 08:00am, more than 50 taxis were impounded for failing to comply with the National Land Transport Act (NLTA).
It is alleged that a group of disgruntled taxi operators mobilised and attacked the traffic officials and further set alight two vehicles belonging to the unit. They also damaged three vehicles during the attack. The taxi operators disarmed an officer and took her service firearm from her.

Mandla Ndlovu, the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport MEC, expressed disappointment about the incident. Officials enforcing road laws won’t tolerate disruptive behavior. There is no excuse for the senseless attack on our inspectors and government vehicles. I call upon on our law enforcement agencies to do everything in their power to arrest this volatile situation and act swiftly in apprehending the perpetrators of this criminality,” said MEC Ndlovu.
