Pietermaritzburg-born actress Thuso Mbedu put SA on the map for winning a Spirit Award for her role in The Underground Railroad series.

Many congratulated her on social media for her award. Mbedu was up against Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts), Jana Schmieding (Rutherford Falls), Jasmine Cephas Jones (Blindspotting) and Deborah Ayorinde (THEM: Covenant) for the female lead honour.

Caught by surprise, she said on stage, “they told me several times to prepare something and I didn’t. First and foremost, thank you to Film Independent for this recognition.” She also thanked the production team and her sister.
