MBOMBELA – The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) in collaboration with the South African Police Service has confiscated 350 illegal gambling machines around the province.
MER’s Cedrick Chiloane said most of the machines were taken from spaza shops where minors had access to them. “People younger than the age of 18 years of age probably used them. By confiscating these machines, we wanted to send out a strong message about illegal gambling.”

He further said as part of regulation in the industry, all gambling machines that have been licensed need to go through a process of certification before being used by the public. “The ones that are currently being destroyed are illicit. All areas or venues with legal machines needs to adhere to rules and regulations enforced,” said Chiloane.

Members of the public were further encouraged report illegal gambling activities to their nearest police stations or communicate with MER via their social media platforms.
