Mathabe was the Speaker of Council since August 2016, this comes after Thulare Madileng resigned as mayor in a special council sitting on September 30.

According to the municipality, the reason for his resignation was due to family related commitments. “The municipality respects his decision and will continue to support him. The municipality would like to wish him all of the best with his future endeavours,” read a statement that was issued out then.
