Suspects kill cyclist after attempted hijacking on the N12

A cyclist in his early thirties was killed by suspects who were chased by security officers from a shootout yesterday.

The police said the suspects to flee from private securities after attempting to hijack a truck on the N12 off-ramp in Etwatwa near Sundra.

According to the report, two Pakistani citizens were travelling on the N12 towards Emalahleni after purchasing goods from Springs. Four suspects who drove a stolen Toyota Corolla attempted to hijack them pulled them over.

The private security guards were patrolling and noticed what was unfolding and rushed to the scene. On arrival, a shootout ensued between the securities and the suspects. Two suspects were shot and killed.

“Two unlicensed firearms were recovered. The other two suspects fled the scene with a vehicle and were chased by securities towards Katboschfontein Road in Sundra. The suspects bumped into a cyclist near Sundra as they were fleeing to evade the arrest. Unfortunately, the cyclist succumbed to his injuries. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and ran on foot where they disappeared into the nearby bushes. The Sundra Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide,” read the police statement.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the Corolla was stolen in February 2022 at Kempton Park, Gauteng with false number plates.
