Detainee and murder-accused, Philemon Lukhele was moved to the Maximum Correctional Facility after they found him in possession of a cellphone on May 24.

The Department of Correctional Services confirmed this and an investigation is underway to establish how the phone was smuggled and the people involved. “A criminal case was also registered with the South African Police Service, CAS 420/05/2022. We have transferred Detainee Lukhele to a Maximum Section of the Barberton Correctional Centre,” read the statement.

The department further added that for the country to have safe correctional centres. They expect nothing but strict adherence to safety standards. “Visitors, inmates, officials and private citizens caught contravening our regulations shall be dealt with through the criminal justice system. DCS’ resolve is clear. We shall never spare those involved in the smuggling of contrabands any mercy.”
