The arrest was executed on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, by the Hawks’ Middelburg and Nelspruit Serious Corruption Investigation teams.

The investigation relates to alleged fraud, theft, corruption, money laundering and contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) involving about R114 million earmarked for emergency repairs and maintenance at schools in the province.

40 suspects were already arrested in February this year including 21 company directors, 10 government officials and family members allegedly linked to the scheme.The latest suspect was sought after a warrant was issued by the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court.

She is alleged to have received more than R1 million through transactions involving four service providers and her husband, who is also an accused in the matter.She faces a charge of money laundering and is expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court today.

The other accused are expected back in court on December 1, 2026. One accused was released after investigations revealed his credentials had been used without his knowledge.

Grace Mokoka was arrested on a warrant in connection with a case registered in Nelspruit in 2018. She faces charges of fraud, theft, corruption under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA), and money laundering under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA).

The case stems from a land restitution project involving the Ingogo Communal Property Association (CPA), which successfully lodged a claim in 2018. After the land was restored, the CPA requested assistance from the Department to acquire farming and firefighting equipment.

It is alleged that the project was exploited through a fraudulent scheme in which MPG Mash Trading (Pty) Ltd submitted an invoice for services that were never rendered. Mokoka, then serving as Deputy Director of Finance, allegedly approved payment of R1,358,440 to the company without following procurement processes.

Investigations revealed that the company’s director, Mduduzi Mashwama, allegedly submitted the invoice after being approached by Sikhumbuzo Nkosi, who had been appointed as project manager by departmental project officer Godfrey Mchunu. Mchunu and Nkosi were already arrested in connection with the matter in 2025.

Mashwama has also been charged in his personal capacity and as a representative of the company.Nkosi and Mokoka were previously sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment in separate but similar matters. Both were on parole when arrested in this case.

Mokoka appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on 29 September 2026, where she was granted R1,000 bail. The case was postponed to 26 October 2026, where she will join her co-accused, who were also each released on R1,000 bail.The investigation is being conducted by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit.

The accused, Katlego Mokoena (19) and Lungelo Sithole (19), appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court in connection with the murder of the 20-year-old. The pair face a charge of murder after allegedly stabbing her to death at her home in Mataffin in November 2025.

The State has previously opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the offence and what it says is strong evidence linking the accused to the crime. However, proceedings have been stalled by delays in securing a directive from the DPP. The Prosecutor told the court that more time is needed before a final decision can be made, resulting in yet another postponement.

The matter is further complicated by the possibility of additional charges. DNA results, which are still outstanding, are expected to determine whether Mathabela was sexually assaulted prior to her death. Should this be confirmed, the State may amend the charge sheet to include further charges.

Defence lawyers have criticised the repeated delays. Bontle Lebotse, representing Mokoena, argued that the postponements are unjustified, noting that the case docket had already been submitted to the DPP for review. “We are not happy with that. We objected to it being an unreasonable delay from the part of the State and considered most of the time that have elapsed,” she said.

Lebotse further told Mpumalanga Mirror that the defence opposed the postponement and applied for the matter to be struck off the roll until the state is ready to proceed. Advocate Patt Sekatane, representing Sithole, echoed these concerns, describing the delays as “very bizarre.”

He pointed out that the matter has now been postponed three times for the same reason, despite earlier indications from the State that investigations had been finalised.

The case continues to draw widespread attention, with Mathabela’s family and the broader community still waiting for progress in the pursuit of justice. The matter has now been postponed to 5 June 2026.

Members were conducting routine patrols along Samora Machel Street near the High Court at approximately 03:30 when they noticed a white bakkie joining the road from Kaapsehoop Road. Upon attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, ignoring police instructions.

A chase ensued, during which the suspect drove at high speed and allegedly disregarded traffic signals. The pursuit ended near the garage curve, where the driver lost control of the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was fitted with false registration plates from Mpumalanga Province, while the original registration belongs to Gauteng Province. The vehicle was reported stolen in Nigel.

The suspect was arrested and is facing charges related to possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Additional cases linked to theft in Springs are also under investigation.

The suspect is expected to appear at Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court soon. Investigations are ongoing.
