PIENAAR – A tragic incident occurred on Monday morning, September 8, when a 41-year-old man was found hanging from a marula tree in the veld near Sicelosetfu Secondary School.
According to police, a complaint was received about a male who had hung himself in a veld near the school. Upon arrival, officers found the deceased, who allegedly used a blue electric cord to hang himself from the tree.
“Officers found a crowd of school learners watching the scene and promptly chased them away, cordoning off the area,” said SAPS spokesperson Sgt Emily Themba.
Themba noted that paramedics confirmed his death at the scene, and his body was taken to a government mortuary for further examination, adding that the circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation. His family is grappling with the aftermath, struggling to understand what might have led him to take his own life.

Community members claimed that Khethukuthula Khoza seemed okay just a day before his death, adding to the family’s confusion. His sister, Promise Masilela, shared that they only found out about the incident through a Facebook post and a call from a neighbor.
“What surprises us is that some people said they were with him the day before, and he seemed happy. To be honest, I’m still trying to process my emotions because as a family, we are struggling to understand what might have driven him to this point,” she stated.
The family revealed that the deceased hadn’t shown any signs of distress or mentioned any problems that could have led to his death.
“We know men don’t often open up about their struggles, they tend to bottle things up, which might have contributed to the tragic outcome,” Masilela added. “His loss has hit the family hard, especially given that he leaves behind three children.”
