Investigation underway after councillor’s murder in Mkhondo

Three armed men shot an ANC councillor and three others dead in Mkhondo last Friday.

According to the police, Sibonelo Ntshangase was dropped off by a friend, Sizwe Mbingo who was driving a bakkie. Three men armed men appeared in the yard and fired multiple shots at the Mthembu and the friend who was still inside the bakkie. The mechanic was shot and the three suspects fled to an unknown direction.

The Police in Mkhondo and the paramedics were called to the scene. Mthembu and his mechanic were driven to a nearby hospital. They certified the mechanic dead on arrival while the councillor succumbed to his injuries moments later. Mthembu’s friend was also certified dead. A case with three counts of murder was opened and the suspects are still at large.

The Premier, Refilwe Mtswheni-Tsipane visited the family yesterday. Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe, sent his condolences to the families. “We must all work together to bring to book perpetrators who deserve lengthy jail terms. This is the second time in recent months that we lost a councilor at the hands of callous criminals. Condemnation alone is not enough. Such barbaric individuals must be urgently brought to book. The police should not spare any effort to ensure justice,” said the MEC.
