EMALAHLENI- Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Jackie Macie, visited the families of two women who tragically lost their lives in a Gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) incident in Vosman today.

The MEC’s visit comes after the devastating news of the two victims who were allegedly torched by a male suspect on July 23. According to the police, the two victims, a 21-year-old mother of his children and a 23-year-old relative, were rushed to Witbank Hospital with serious burn wounds after the incident.

Unfortunately, the victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment in hospital, with the 23-year-old passing away on August 1 and the 21-year-old on August 3.

READ | GBV victim vents out two years later

MEC Macie strongly condemned the incident, emphasising that perpetrators of GBVF have no place in communities and must be permanently removed. “This shows that the war against GBVF requires the whole society to be involved,” he said.

“We need individuals who will commit themselves and work in their communities to ensure that there is no one behind closed doors that suffers silently.” He added that despite efforts to eradicate GBVF, women and children continue to suffer at the hands of abusers.

MEC Macie urged women in abusive relationships to seek help and leave such relationships before it’s too late.

“We have seen how women suffer at the hands of their partners and some ending up losing their lives,” he said. “We urge women out there to leave abusive relationships and marriages before they end up paying with their lives.”

READ | “Stiff sentences must be handed down to GBV accused” – Mashatile

The MEC emphasised the importance of thorough investigations and evidence collection to ensure the conviction of the suspect. “Police must work around the clock to gather all necessary evidence,” he said.

The suspect is currently in police custody, facing two counts of murder, and is expected to appear in the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on August 7, 2025.

Five suspects between the ages 19 and 40 from Mozambique were arrested following the murder and hijacking of Divisional Manager of Communication, Marketing and Branding, at Nkangala District Municipality, David Masombuka.

This incident occurred over the weekend when the deceased was driving from Kwamhlanga to attend a meeting in Witbank on Sunday, 29 September but failed to arrive at his destination.

Police say his family tried to get hold of him but he was unreachable. After he was reported missing at Kwamhlanga Police Station, the tracking company was also notified. This led to the discovery of his vehicle near a fuel station in Witbank.

During their arrest, it is reported that they were found with some personal items believed to be that of the victim. A subsequent investigation led to the discovery of the victim’s body in the bushes next to a fuel station in Witbank.

READ | Emalahleni pair appear in court for murder

The suspects are expected to appear in the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court today facing charges of murder, hijacking and possession of suspected stolen properties.

The investigators are working in partnership with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to ascertain the status of the suspects in South Africa hence charges in relation to contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa could be added against the suspects as the investigation continues.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, strongly condemned the incident and commended the action taken by police in arresting the suspects. “The collaboration between the tracker company and SAPS members was instrumental in bringing the suspects to justice. We await the legal process to unfold and seek justice for the slain victim, ” said the General.

A case stemming from a Gender-Based-Violence and Femicide (GBVF) incident which reportedly occurred in Vosman on 4 August 2024, is back on the court roll.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on 6 September, 2024.

An assault case with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened by a 38-year-old woman and the matter was investigated leading to the arrest of a 42 year-old male suspect. However, the case was struck off the roll and the suspect was released.

“There are also allegations that came to the attention of the SAPS, regarding a delay by members to immediately open the case upon attending the said incident on that said day.Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) incidents are regarded as serious and the SAPS remains committed to responding promptly and effectively to all reports of such incidents,” reads a police statement.

READ | “Stiff sentences must be handed down to GBV accused” – Mashatile

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has since welcomed the support given to the victim. He encouraged members of the public to work hand-in-hand with the state organs assigned for this case and refrain from any interference or actions that may hinder the investigators and prosecution team.

“The team is working collaborately and professionally in order to do the correct thing. We do not want a situation that will derail the team unnecessary thereby opening loopholes for the suspect to walk free. We are happy that the date is set though we wished for an earlier date but let the wheel of justice move into the right direction, ” said the General.

It is alleged that in October last year, Vusumuzi Phakane had access to information on RDP houses around Emalahleni and colluded with Justice Sambo to sell the houses. The two approached Caroline Kgoalane and used her the advertise the houses on social media.

Caroline Koloane.

“The unsuspecting victims would respond to the advert seen on social media and be directed by the syndicate to the Municipality offices to complete the agreement of sale forms. They would be further advised to go to the lawyers for the agreement and the victims became convinced that the sale is legitimate. They would be told to make the payment into Sambo’s Nedbank account. The syndicate allegedly shared the money amongst themselves,” read the Hawks statement.

Various victims produced documents as proof of purchase for the same house. According to the Hawks, the victims lost approximately R300 000.00.

Justice Sambo.

The matter was then reported to the Hawks. During the investigation, it was established that the lawful owners of the houses are alive. The suspects were then linked to the allegations, traced, and arrested.

Phakane and Kgoalane were each released on R10 000 bail while Sambo was remanded in custody because he has previous convictions. The case was postponed to August 20 for Sambo’s formal bail applications.
