MBOMBELA – Following a two-day Provincial General Council (PGC) over the weekend, the African National Congress says it will ensure it retains all its municipalities in the upcoming local government elections next year.

This is according to Chairperson, Mandla Ndlovu, who addressed the media after concluding the PGC at Mbombela Stadium.
Ndlovu said with its election machinery well oiled, the party will attain victory.

He emphasised on the correlation between the strength of the organisation and the outcome of the election, stating that if structures are weak, they will not be able to mount a successful campaign.

“We have to build strong branches. Our branches are the frontline of the ANC. They serve as a direct link to people and the organisation. Let us empower branches with Human Resources, training and necessary support in order for them to engage effectively with communities,” he said.

READ | “ANC members must adapt to serving communities or risk defeat” – SG Mbalula warns

Ndlovu added that he is confident it would yield positive results as all elected RECs have been deployed to convene sub-regions.
“We know we will have strong branches of the ANC that will be ready to face Local Government Elections.”

Airing his views on the outcomes of the PGC, SANCO’s Provincial Secretary, Linda Dlamini expressed the importance of keeping track of the resolutions raised during the PGC.

SANCO’s Provincial Secretary, Linda Dlamini.

“The issues raised that include the lack of water, illegal immigration and the high cost of electricity, are of operation and confrontation. We are pre-occupied with defending Abahlali and we are hopeful that the ANC must walk the talk and implement all the resolutions made. “It is no longer an issue of having a talk show, but this is a platform that should be taken in the concept of accelerating the national democratic efforts,” concluded Dlamini.

ELUKWATINI – The Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality has been put under spotlight for failing to instill its by-laws on spaza shops owned by foreign nationals leaving locals out of business.

This is an outcry of residents from Elukwatini and its surrounding areas including Mooiplaas.

Following the recent cabinet meeting, the Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni in her statement on the outcomes, deliberated on the issue of addressing spaza shop ownership in the country, including compliance.

Phindile Mathebula is one of the residents from Mooiplaas who says that the municipality has failed her and many other young local people. Mathebula and six other young ladies were selling fast food to make a living and fight unemployment.

However, many in her group were forced to close business after a local foreign shop owner who sells, groceries and hardware materials in one shop decided to sell fast food at half the price they charge.

READ | 24 Matsulu learners rushed to hospital

Mathebula and other community members called a meeting on 30 September with the local councillors and other stakeholders including SANCO, the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Labor.

“The shop owner did not produce a municipal permit during the meeting and he was told to shut down the fast food service because it was also a health hazard beside them taking away bread from our mouths,” she said.

However, the shop owner did not keep to his promise and continued selling the food. “I went and put a chain on the gate of the shop. They called the police on me and lodged a protection order against me,” added Mathebula.

SANCO Chairperson, Wyne Mashele attributed challenges related to non compliance to the municipality’s lack of action. Mashele said the municipality only started conducting inspections a year ago. This was when the organisation and community members visited local spaza shops and supermarkets including the ones in the CBD and found expired goods.

“After that, they did not go again and these inspections need to be done regularly. We have also found that they are in no possession of municipal permits. It is a problem because they do not comply with any law. Now they are selling everything and locals are left stranded,” said Mashele.

Nonetheless, spokesperson for the municipality, Thapelo Phetlo insisted that the municipality was conducting quarterly inspections to check compliance.

“The municipality has a database for spaza shops that are operating within the municipality, however the process is not exhaustive due to the fact that on a daily basis there is a new shop,” said Phetla.

Two Elukwatini women who were promised jobs are crying foul after a local man who allegedly defrauded money from them mysteriously walked away from police cells without bail.

One of his victims, an unemployed mother, spent her children’s social grant money to pay the alleged suspect over R4 000 on seperate occasions.

According to the woman, she received a circulating message about an employment recruiter for a renowned security company, who was looking for security guards and tellers.

READ | Hawks arrest staff members for R60 million fraud

She was told to make various payments amounting to more than R4000 for tests that apparently didn’t exist and the retrieval of certificates which were later confirmed to be fake.

Another lady who works at a local retail company was also defrauded R50 000 by the same suspect. Both women opened a case at the Elukwatini police station on September 25. The suspect was arrested and expected to appear before court the following day. However, his case was not heard and he was released from custody without bail.

Local Sanco leader Wyne Mashele said they are highly disappointed by the justice system and the manner the case has been handled.
“While we were assisting these women to kake legal action we discovered that he has defrauded other people over R80 000 before and he continues to walk scott free,” said Mashele.

Elukwatini police spokesperson Sergeant Wiseman Nkosi confirmed that the case of fraud has been opened.

“The docket was taken to court on the 26th of September, but somehow it was not placed on the court roll. When a docket is not placed on the roll, the suspect gets released. We are not sure of the reason yet, we are waiting for the docket to return from court to know the reason why it was not rolled,” said Nkosi.

“Khuluma Mhlali” also seeks to support the ANC in its quest to claim victory for the forthcoming national and provincial elections later in the year on a date still to be declared.
SANCO provincial chairperson, Vusi Shongwe, did not mince his words as he said: “As SANCO, we are the voices of our communities, who are putting pressure on the ANC to deliver on its promises. At the same time, we are giving communities to voice out their grievances. As SANCO, we will ensure these matters are addressed, in turn, we will reward the ANC the people’s vote to regain its absolute 65% majority.”
