An alleged male fugitive was shot and dead during a shootout with police yesterday afternoon at Mattafin.
According to the police, they received information about an alleged fugitive spotted at Mattafin (next to Parks Board offices). The suspect identified was identified as Bheki Martin Phiri (28) wanted for escaping from lawful custody on November 11, 2022. He was also wanted for a case of attempted murder whereby a police Sergeant was shot and wounded by the suspect on December 22, 2022.
“The police received information about his whereabouts and they drove to his location. On arrival, the suspect noticed and started firing some shots. The police retalliated with several shots and the suspect was fatally shot,” said the police.

A firearm and live ammunition were found next to the suspect. He was certified dead at the scene by the paramedics. A case of murder was opened and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will conduct further investigation.
